How To Choose A Cattery

It can be a difficult decision where to leave your cat when you go on holiday. You want to make sure that your furry friend has a good holiday too and is looked after properly. With that in mind, here are a few pointers to help you choose a good cattery.

1. Check that the cattery is licensed. All catteries should be licensed by their local authority. This license should be on display at the cattery, but you can also confirm the license with the environmental health department of your local council.

2. Check that the cattery only accepts vaccinated animals. All catteries should require that cats staying with them have been vaccinated against feline enteritis and cat flu. This helps to limit the risk to your moggy during their stay.

3. A visit to the cattery is highly recommended. The owners shouldn't mind showing you around the facilities. Whilst there, make sure that the facilities are up to scratch and that the cats are well looked after. Check that the housing units are kept clean, that there is plenty of space for your cat to move around and that there is a secure area for your cat to sleep. Make sure that the units have suitable heating. This is especially important for older moggies and during colder months.

How to choose a cattery4. Have a chat with the cattery staff and ask how they will look after your cat. By speaking with them you should get a good feel for the care that they will give your cat during their stay. Be sure to explain if your cat requires any special attention or has any dietary or medical requirements.

5. If the cattery houses dogs as well as cats, check that the kennels are kept a suitable distance away from the cats. The sound of barking can make cats nervous, especially if your cat is not used to dogs.
